Introduction

Google is making waves with its recent introduction of Gemini, a new generative AI platform. While Gemini shows promise in certain aspects, it falls short in others. What exactly is Gemini? How can it be utilized? And how does it compare to competitors?

Updates and Guide

To simplify keeping up with the latest developments in Gemini, we’ve compiled this useful guide, which will be continually updated with new models and features as they are released.

What is Gemini?

Gemini represents Google’s long-awaited next-generation generative AI model family, jointly developed by DeepMind and Google Research. It comprises three variants:

  • Gemini Ultra: The flagship model.
  • Gemini Pro: A lightweight version.
  • Gemini Nano: A smaller model optimized for mobile devices like the Pixel 8 Pro.

All Gemini models are inherently multimodal, meaning they can process more than just text. They were trained on a diverse dataset including audio, images, videos, codebases, and multilingual text.

This sets Gemini apart from models like Google’s LaMDA, which is solely text-trained and unable to understand or generate non-textual content. While Gemini’s multimodal abilities are still evolving, they offer a significant advantage over LaMDA.

Distinction Between Bard and Gemini

Google’s branding choices have caused confusion regarding the relationship between Bard and Gemini. Bard serves as an interface for accessing certain Gemini models, akin to an app or client. Gemini, on the other hand, comprises the model family itself and is not a standalone interface.

To draw a parallel with OpenAI’s offerings, Bard is comparable to ChatGPT, while Gemini corresponds to the underlying language model (e.g., GPT-3.5 or 4).

Additionally, Gemini operates independently from Imagen-2, a text-to-image model, adding further complexity to Google’s AI ecosystem.

Capabilities of Gemini

Given its multimodal nature, Gemini theoretically offers a wide range of functionalities, including speech transcription, image and video captioning, and artwork generation. However, many of these capabilities are still in development.

Google’s track record, particularly with the underwhelming Bard launch and misleading promotional materials for Gemini, raises skepticism about the platform’s current capabilities. While Gemini is available in a limited capacity, its full potential remains to be seen.

Google’s Gemini App Softly Lands in Canada: Early Access Available but Officially “Not Supported”

Canadian Android users eager to try Google’s new AI assistant, Gemini, might be able to jump the gun and access it through sideloading, despite its official unavailability in the Play Store.

Limited Launch:

  • Last week, Google launched Gemini in the U.S. and announced an upcoming expansion to other regions “soon.”
  • While an official Canadian launch hasn’t occurred, some users are reporting successful sideloading.

Sideloading Shenanigans:

  • Android Police reported instances of users successfully sideloading the Gemini APK outside the U.S., even though Play Store listings indicated unavailability.
  • This method worked on Pixel devices in Germany and India, despite an initial “location not supported” message.
  • Sideloading involves downloading and installing apps from outside the Play Store, which carries potential security risks.

Early Glimpse with Caveats:

  • Sideloading allows Canadians to experience Gemini’s features like text generation, code assistance, and creative writing tools.
  • However, functionality might be limited compared to the official rollout and could change without notice.

Official Rollout on the Horizon?:

  • Google’s lack of official support and inconsistent location restrictions suggest a potential imminent Play Store launch in Canada.
  • Users comfortable with sideloading can access the APK, but proceed with caution due to security risks.

Key Takeaways:

  • Gemini’s unofficial access in Canada highlights Google’s gradual global rollout strategy.
  • Sideloading offers early access but comes with potential drawbacks.
  • An official Canadian launch with wider availability and support is likely around the corner.

Additional Information:

  • Consider including user experience reports from Canadians who successfully sideloaded Gemini for a more personal touch.
  • Briefly mention Gemini’s advanced features like “Gemini Advanced” available through Google One AI Premium Plan.
