During my recent 10-day vacation to Japan at the end of March—my second visit since an unforgettable trip in February 2020—I decided to ditch traditional roaming plans and try out an eSIM for the first time. The decision transformed my travel experience, offering convenience and significant cost savings.

Previously, in 2020, my travel group and I opted for a Pocket WiFi from the airport, which involved pre-booking, pickup, and return processes—a minor hassle but noticeable during long travel days. This time, I embraced the simplicity and efficiency of eSIM technology.

Setting Up the eSIM

After opting for an eSIM through an online travel service, which partnered with a tech provider offering extensive global coverage including Japan, I received an 8GB plan valid from March 20th to April 4th. This was slightly longer than my actual stay, providing a cushion for any unexpected delays—a common occurrence in travel.

The setup process was streamlined and user-friendly. A simple email detailed a four-step setup process: scan the provided QR code with your smartphone and follow the on-screen prompts to add the eSIM as a secondary line. While I encountered a setup error in Ontario, the issue resolved once I reached Japan, which was far more convenient than navigating airport signage to find a WiFi rental kiosk while jet-lagged.

Advantages Over Traditional Roaming

Traditionally, I would use services like Koodo’s Easy Roam, which has become quite costly over the years, now at $16/day for international use. For a potential 11-day data usage, this could have escalated to $176. In contrast, the eSIM package cost just $70 for the entire duration, offering substantial savings. The extra data proved invaluable for social media, maps, and navigating Japan’s pricey taxi system.

Experiencing Reliable Connectivity

Throughout my journey, the eSIM provided smooth and reliable connectivity. Despite brief interruptions on bullet train rides through rural areas, the service was consistent, enhancing my travel experience without the worry of exorbitant roaming fees or draining my personal data cap back home.

Conclusion: The Case for eSIM Technology

By the end of my trip, the benefits of using an eSIM were clear. It not only saved money but also added an element of convenience that traditional roaming plans or Pocket WiFi rentals couldn’t match. While my travel arrangement didn’t tie me to any specific booking agency, the flexibility of adding an eSIM independently proved to be a significant advantage. The technology also saved me from potential extra charges upon returning home, as it didn’t eat into my personal data allowance.

For anyone planning an international trip, considering an eSIM can lead to a more seamless and cost-effective travel experience. Whether you’re booking through various agencies or using points for flights, an eSIM is a versatile and savvy choice for modern travelers looking to stay connected affordably.
